What is a Designator?
Designators are a way to categorize experiences students will have throughout the program that align with leadership development, education, and training. Fellows are asked to choose 6 experiences with at least one experience in each of the following categories: development, education, and training. Here is an overview of how designators work.
Leadership Training | Leadership Education | Leadership Development |
Activities designed to develop an individual or group’s ability to perform practical skills that facilitate effective leadership – usually a component of leadership education. (Roberts & Allen, 2011) | A series of training interventions designed to enhance the knowledge, skills, and abilities of individuals interested in engaging in leadership. (Roberts & Allen, 2011)
For further clarification, leadership education is the pedagogical practice of facilitating leadership learning in an effort to build human capacity and is informed by leadership theory and research. It values and is inclusive of both curricular and co-curricular efforts. (Association of Leadership Educators, 2014) |
A continuous, systemic process designed to expand the capacities and awareness of individuals, groups, and organizations in an effort to meet shared goals and objectives. (Roberts & Allen, 2011)

Signature and Premiere Programs
The Division of Student Affairs offers and manages diverse programs, events, student organizations, workshops, trainings, etc. These programs are long-standing within the Division, and out of the 6 designators participants must have, 3 will be Signature or Premiere Programs. To submit your program as a Signature or a Premiere Program, please fill out this webform.
Reflection
An essential aspect of this program is reflection and participants are required to reflect in a way that is best for them after each experience. For some students, this will be meeting with their Leadership Coach more than twice a semester. For others, this will be journaling or reflecting on their own. Fellows will be given a journal at the Leadership Fellows Retreat and asked to use this as one reflection tool. Leadership Coaches will be given tangible reflection tools and ideas to use with their students.
